There are many causes of indoor slip-and-fall accidents

It’s easy to assume that when you’re walking indoors, you don’t really have to worry about your safety. Unfortunately, it’s possible you could be the victim of a slip-and-fall accident when you least expect it.

Take, for example, a leisurely stroll through your favorite department store. Even though you assume you’re safe, something could get in your way that causes an accident.

Here are some of the more common causes of indoor slip-and-fall accidents:

  • Lack of adequate warnings, such as a sign, that the floor is wet or in the process of being cleaned
  • The use of too much polish or wax, especially on an incline or decline
  • Lack of barriers if there is a floor defect that could cause a slip-and-fall accident
  • Neglecting to use nonskid ingredients when necessary
  • Damaged carpet, such as bulges that serve as a trip hazard
  • Mats or rugs with low spots or curled edges
  • Missing or worn step
  • Missing or damaged handrail
  • Slippery stairs, such as those that have been waxed

It’s possible you could catch one of these things before you’re part of a slip-and-fall accident, but that’s not always the case.

If you’re part of an indoor slip-and-fall accident, stay where you are until help arrives. You want to receive immediate medical attention, while also making it clear to the store that you were injured on their property.

Once you feel better about your health and have a treatment strategy in place, you can then focus on your legal rights and the steps you can take to hold the negligent party responsible.
